A short chronology
1767 : Tahiti was discovered by Samuel Wallis.
1772-1775 : Spanish missionaries landed in Polynesia.
1788 : Mutiny of the "bounty".
1797 : The first Protestant missionaries arrive in Tahiti.
Henry Nott (1774-1844) was an English missionary to Tahiti (in the Society Islands of Polynesia). One of the first missionaries sent out by the newly organized London Missionary Society, he arrived in Tahiti in 1797. Returned to England only two times during 47 years on the field. Nott was the principal translator of the Bible into Tahitian
1808-1815 : Pomare II, with the help of missionaries, defeated the last pagan. The marae were destroyed and the Tahitians were converted.
1818 : Crook based Papeete.
1819 : Promulgation of the Code Pomare, the first code of Tahitian laws : prohibition of nudity (requirement to wear body-covering), the ban on dances and songs, described as lewd, tattoos and flower garlands.
1852 : Departure of English missionaries.
29/06/1880 : Pomare V donated to France its territories, which became the French Establishments in Oceania.
1959 : French Polynesia became a French territory overseas.
1963 : Installation of Nuclear Experimentation Center of the Pacific.
28/11/1980 : Tahitian language becomes official.
1984 : Statute of internal autonomy.
